Personal Essay Contest



Townsend Press is offering its first PERSONAL ESSAY CONTEST to educators and students 18 years of age or older. Details are below.


In the course of our lives, all of us form a personal religion—a belief system about our role and purpose in the world. In 2,000 words or more, write a paper describing your personal belief system. Your essay should detail key influences or experiences that shaped the development of your own special faith or philosophy of life.

Except upon special request, winning entrants agree to allow the use of their picture and name in a collection of the essays that Townsend Press hopes to publish.


The deadline for submissions is August 30, 2019. Email your entry to While feedback cannot be provided for each submission, a confirmation message will be sent when an entry is received.


Every essay submitted will be read. There will be 20 or more instant awards of $100 given to compelling submissions before the final deadline. In addition to the instant awards, Townsend Press will also offer the following final awards at the end of the contest.

  • First place: $2,500
  • Second place: $2,000
  • Third place: $1,500
  • Honorable mentions (25 in all): $500
