Student Letters

Below are two examples of letters recently sent to Townsend Press.

Dear Book Editor,

I am writing to you to tell you about myself and to share why I think reading is important for my learning and growth. My summer school teacher made me read a Bluford series book and I would very much like to have three more. I so appreciate that you offer these books to students like me who don’t have the resources to buy my own books. Thank you.

My name is Consuelo ______. School is very important to me. I work extra hard in school to be respectful and get good grades because I see my mother working hard for me and also want my inspiring grandmother to be proud of me. I get frustrated when I see my little sister fooling around with rude people and not doing well in school. I want to grow up to do something important, something that helps the world. Just so you can know I‘m a Latin-American.

I once had a teacher that said if I learned how to read really well then I could be my own teacher. I could learn how to do anything through reading. I just want to make a diffence in my life and the lifes of others.

Thanks again for providing books to kids like me. I know my summer will be great with three books to read.

These 3 Bluford books look interesting to me.

1.    Until We Meet Again
2.    The Bully
3.    Lost and Found

Here is my address:

Dear Townsend Press,

My name is Tara ______, and I’d like to start off by telling you a little about my reading experience so far. I’ve always been a great reader since my elementary years!
FCAT scores were always above average, and surprisingly, one of my hobbies included reading. When I reached middle school my sixth grade FCAT scores were so high I didn’t have to take reading courses for the rest of my K-12 years. I can honestly say that is when reading fell from my interest. I thought, if I’m so good at reading, why read? That was my mistake. When I graduated, I took a placement test at Broward Community College. To my surprise, I missed the minimum passing score by one point! So they placed me in intermediate reading, and one of the books required for my course was Ten Steps to Improving College Reading which is how I found out about your website. I figured I can fall back into the love of reading if I tried, and then I came across your offer. I was amazed at your proposal and here I am writing to you!  I would really appreciate if you could help me find that “need to read” again. The three books listed on your website that seem the most interesting to me are:

Facing Addiction: Three True Stories
It Couldn’t Happen to Me: Three True Stories of Teenage Moms
Surviving Abuse: Four True Stories

I chose these three books because they concern realistic problems that many of us humans face today. I really get into the books when there’s common ground established.

Also, the website said to include my address:

Thanks for everything!

Sincerely,
